Spooky Stories

It's that time of the year again! Pumpkins everywhere, bright colors on the trees, and plenty of chills in the dark while eating that hard-won candy.

Maybe you want to finish up your Halloween (or even begin, we don't judge around here) with a spooky kdrama. So what's your poison?

It is ghosts that go bump in the night? If that's the case:

Check out Arang and the Magistrate for a Joseon-era tale of murders and mayhem. Arang is a ghost with amnesia, struggling to hide from Grim Reapers and survive in a world that's not kind to the unremembered dead. Kim Eun Oh is the passing scholar who can see ghosts and gets roped into helping her find her identity...and murderer. But don't worry--it's not just scary. It's also funny, action-packed, and romantic.

There's also The Master's Sun, a spine-chilling tale about a young woman who can see ghosts and the man whose touch makes them disappear.

Ghosts not your thing? How about aliens:

Secret Investigation Record (also known as Joseon X-Files) is about a secret bureau with a mission to track down the inexplicable...starting with the strange lights that appear in the sky. Kim Hyung Do and his trusty team encounter all kinds of odd things besides aliens too. It's brilliant, besides being perfect to watch with a blanket and a mug of hot cider in front of a roaring fire place.

If you're feeling more sweet n' fluffy than trick-or-treat, there's also the classic You from Another Star, with a handsome, super-powered alien out to protect the beautiful actress being hunted by a serial killer. Romance and shenanigans abound, because what else do you expect when your boyfriend can freeze time and walk through walls?

Prefer a few vampires and their weird trick-or-treat practices? Well, I hate to tell you, but despite dramaland's recent spate of vampire dramas, none of them are really that good. But, if you MUST have vampires, there are some decent ones:

Vampire Prosecutor is about...you guessed it...a vampire prosecutor. Aided by his trusty team, he'll track down the really bad guys of the underworld. But when it looks like there's a vampire serial killer on the loose, he'll have to face the mysteries of his own past.

and

Vampire Prosecutor 2 where the team's back together and solving new crimes. But if Min Tae Yeon wants to know more about vampire history and lore, he's going to have to find the new vampire murderer on the block, who has some dreadful secrets of his own.

If werewolves are your interest, we've got some more problems. There aren't really any werewolf dramas...but there are some things kind of close:

You could try My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, which is about a nine-tailed fox spirit accidentally released from her ancient prison by a spoiled rich boy. Saddled with her care and keeping, the two gradually become entangled in love and the consequences of immortality and death.

There's also the movie A Werewolf Boy, which isn't exactly about werewolves, but is pretty great anyway. A wild boy is discovered by a new family in the area, and becomes attached to the eldest daughter. Think Edward Scissorhands.

Happy Halloween and many scares!
